MANILA, Philippines – Five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach is not eager to see a rematch between his prized ward, Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, and junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
Pacquiao defeated Cotto via a 12th round technical knockout when they fought in November 2009, but not before enduring a tough challenge from the Puerto Rican.
Cotto was able to bounce back from his loss to Pacquiao, and just last Saturday defeated Mexico’s Antonio Margarito with a 10th round TKO.
When asked by some of his Twitter followers how a Pacquiao-Cotto fight would break down, Roach answered, “They fought already.”
He added that Pacquiao “had bigger fish to fry” rather than seeking a rematch with Cotto.
Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook said a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch is a possibility, should the Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. mega-fight not push through.
Christ added that Cotto was not well prepared when he fought Pacquiao, essentially training himself for the bout. If Cotto is able to have a better training camp, he may be able to challenge Pacquiao.
But Roach said, there is only one fighter he wants Pacquiao to face.
“Well, I want to see Mayweather for Pacquiao,” he said in a RingTV interview.
Pacquiao has confirmed that negotiations with Mayweather’s team are taking place, although nothing has been finalized.
